John the Baptist preaching

Second Sunday in Advent (December 8, 2019)

Matthew 3:1-12 There is an unmistakable theme in today’s readings. The theme that we hear is people prophesying about the Messiah. It starts in Isaiah, when we hear the prophet proclaiming that one day the Spirit of the Lord would rest on a man who came from the stump of Jesse. The people listening to Isaiah understood that this meant that a successor to David would someday come on the scene. The Jewish people waited expectantly for many years for this to take place.
